An IRS exam, a balance, or years of unfiled returns. We can help, as your firm.

We represent our clients before the IRS in exams, collection, and Appeals. We don’t take stand-alone cases. If you come to us with a problem, you become a client, and we fix the problem and keep it from coming back.

What we handle

IRS and state exams

Individual and business returns, one year or several, including exams that reach across your companies. Appeals when the result is wrong.

Balances you owe

Payment plans, penalty relief, and releasing liens and levies. Offers in compromise where the numbers support one.

Unfiled years

Past returns brought current, for you and your companies, with the IRS transcripts checked first so nothing is missed.

How it works

You become a subscriber. Your regular subscription for your level, with a twelve-month agreement.

The case is its own engagement, with its own fee. One fixed price for the matter, set on what is under exam or what is owed - how many companies, how many years, what stage it has reached - not on hours. You see the number before you sign. An exam at an IRS office, by video, or at your business, on a return we did not prepare, is paid in twelve equal monthly payments, starting at $500 a month for an individual return and starting at $1,000 a month for a company, more when rentals, more companies, or several years are involved. An exam handled by mail is quoted on what it involves. A balance owed is quoted the same way and rolled into your monthly subscription, spread over the months left in your subscription year, never fewer than six. New Jersey, New York, California and Massachusetts residents pay a personal matter in full. IRS user fees, where one applies, are yours.

The fee is the fee. If the case closes early, you paid for the matter, not the months. If the IRS adds a year or a company, or an exam turns into a collection case, that is quoted as a further step before we do it — and we never stop working while a step is being quoted.

Past years come first. Any unfiled returns are part of the engagement from day one.

If the IRS asks about a return we prepared

Routine letters - a math error, a matching notice, a missing form, a state adjustment - are answered as part of your subscription. So is an exam the IRS handles by mail, and a simple payment plan or first-time penalty relief on a balance from a return we prepared. Nobody gets a bill for opening the mail.

An exam at an IRS office, by video, or at your business is different. It is real work, so it is its own engagement: one fixed fee for the matter, quoted before anything starts and paid in twelve equal monthly payments. Starting at $250 a month for a personal return we prepared and starting at $500 a month for a business return we prepared. If an exam by mail turns into one of these, or goes to Appeals, we quote it at that point, before doing the work. New Jersey, New York, California and Massachusetts residents pay a personal matter in full.

What you will never get here is an hourly bill in the middle of an exam, or a handoff to a stranger who has never seen your file. We prepared the return. We handle the exam.

If you are coming to us with something already open — an exam on a year somebody else filed, a balance, years that never got filed — that is work we take on, and we quote it before we start. It is priced on what is actually in front of us, not on which subscription you choose.

How far we go

Virginia Haga is an Enrolled Agent, with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service in every state. That covers exams, collection, and the IRS Independent Office of Appeals. It does not cover Tax Court. If your case needs to go to court, we refer you to a tax attorney and keep working with them as your preparer.
